SONGKRAN DAY 13 to 14 April

The Songkran Festival is the main festival in Thailand and it is indeed the most striking and distinguished, for it is extensively celebrated not only in Thailand but extended to the neighboring countries such as Burma, Cambodia and Laos.

Songkran originate from the Sanskrit word that refers to the entrance of the Sun into any sign of the Zodiac. However, in case of Thailand the Songkran is celebrated at the time when the Sun eclipse on the Zodiac of Aries. As of such, it is celebrated on the 13th April and ends on the 15th April.

In one sense the Songkran Festival consist of the mischievousness and the light-and-easy mood of the Westerner's April Fool's Day. It is the day when each and every individual play pranks on the other individuals that to pass by. Supposedly, the passer by will be caught off-guard as they get wet as a result from the water that are thrown at them.

LOY KRATONG 16 November

Besides the Songkran Festival, the other main and most celebrated festival is the Loy Krathong Day. Loy Krathong is translated loosely as "to float the leaf cup" and it is being celebrated during the month of October and November. Being true to that notion, each and every soul would get themselves one Krathong each and place it at the edge of brimful running water.

The Krathong will eventually float away from their sight filled with that particular person's wishes or worships. At times this celebration also coupled with fireworks and these fireworks apart from being a medium of amusement, they also play significant part in any celebration secularly and religiously - for as the Thai believe, the fireworks are sometimes being light-up in the same spirit as they light candles as an act of worship.
